I picked up this book by Stephen Batchelor for the sole purpose of reading his account of how and why the Buddha was murdered. I'd recommend “Confessions of a Budddhist Atheist” or better, “Buddhism Without Beliefs” – both by Stephen Batchelor – for a reasonable form of Buddhism based on what the original Buddha actually taught.
